LAST HURRAH : Please tell us your background. When & where were you born? BEAVER NELSON : I was born in Oklahoma. I moved to Dallas when I was 2. I moved to Houston when I was 7. I moved to Austin when I was 19. LAST HURRAH : What was your family like? BN : My father is an engineer and project manager in construction. My mother, a secretary. My only sibling, a sister, was 5 years older than me. LAST HURRAH : Do you have a family now? BN : I have been married for almost 7 years. No children. 4 dogs. LAST HURRAH : Do you have any hobbies? BN : I love baseball(Houston Astros) and football(Dallas Cowboys) and I like to play poker. LAST HURRAH : Are you interested in Japan? BN : I would love to play in Japan. Some of my friends have done it and speak highly of it. LAST HURRAH : When did you start listening to music? BN : Very young. LAST HURRAH : What were your early musical influences? Please tell us what kind of music you have been listening to from past to today. BN : Springsteen, Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Rolling Stones, Lucinda Wiiliams and Van Morrison. LAST HURRAH : Please tell us about when you were performing in front of people at the first time. BN : I would drive to Austin from Houston once or twice a year, to play open mic shows. Mostly at a club called The Chicago House. But itfs closed now. LAST HURRAH : When you were 19 years old, you already have performed in Austin, haven't you? Did you have any vision in your future at that time? BN : I knew I wanted to move to Austin after high school. LAST HURRAH : Even though you had a deal with a major record company, your album didn't get released. Were you frustrated? BN : Ifm glad the album was not released. It was not reflected of what I wanted to do, but I didnft really understand that then. LAST HURRAH : Are you tired of music business? Or, would you want to deal with a major record company? BN : I just want to write songs, make records and play shows. However that works best is what I'm interested in. LAST HURRAH : You'd played music thinking that things would get better till your first album came out in 1998? Or did you think of giving up? BN : I had no idea what would happen. It just never made sense to quit. LAST HURRAH : Please tell us about the album that you recorded with Tony Scalzo and Joey Shuffueld. What did it sound like? BN : The rhythm tracks were really good. It had more electric guitars distorted. LAST HURRAH : Are you going to release that album? BN : No. LAST HURRAH : Let's talk about your debut album THE LAST HURRAH. Are you happy with the way it came out? BN : I'm very happy with it. The playing was great and it was a nice group of songs. Scrappy Jud Newcomb was great as producer. LAST HURRAH : You wrote TOO MUCH MOONLIGHT with Jules Shear. How did that happen? And how did the collaboration with him go? BN : I went to Woodstock where he lives in early 1993, before the record I made for Epic. We wrote 2 songs. TOO MUCH MOONLIGHT is the one that didn't fit on the record. So I used it here. The melody was his. LAST HURRAH : Who is your current favorite musician? BN : I really love Ron Sexsmith's newest record WHEREABOUTS. LAST HURRAH : Are you anxcious to see any musicians at SXSW this year? BN : I'm going to play so much, I won't get to see many bands but I want to go to Chip Taylor's show and Michael Hall's show. LAST HURRAH : Any news on your new album? BN : It's done. I'm talking to some labels now. It should be out in late summer. My website www.beavernelson.com will have that info as soon as I know.
